Are maths schools worth it?
This is the question every family asks and the one this site is least willing to answer with a slogan. Here's the case on both sides, plus the evidence gap that ought to inform whichever way you lean.
The case for
- Depth of specialist teaching. A school built entirely around maths can go further and faster than a single department inside a comprehensive sixth form.
- Peer group. Every student around you chose to be there specifically for maths — for some students that's transformative; for others it's just intense.
- Destinations. U-Maths reports that more than one in five students across the network secured Oxford or Cambridge places in 2024. Individual schools' results are covered on their own pages.
- Every maths school inspected to date has been rated Outstanding by Ofsted (under the pre-September-2024 inspection framework).
The case for caution
- Selection effects are doing a lot of unmeasured work. These schools select applicants who are already strong at maths. A lot of what looks like "the school's impact" may just be who walked in the door — see our research page below.
- Travel and time. Wide catchments mean some students face long daily commutes, which is a real cost even before results are considered.
- Leaving your existing school and friends at 16 is a genuine social cost that gets underweighted in decision-making focused purely on academic outcomes.
- Narrow subject range. If you're not sure maths-heavy subjects are the right path, a school built entirely around them is a big commitment to make at 16.
- Newer schools have no track record yet. Comparing a school that opened in 2025 with one that's been running since 2014 is comparing almost no evidence with a decade of it.
There is no independent, controlled evaluation of whether maths schools genuinely add value beyond selecting students who were already going to do well. Every headline figure in this sector — Outstanding ratings, A* rates, Oxbridge percentages — comes from schools that select on mathematical aptitude at 16.
