What A-levels can you take at a maths school?

Mathematics and Further Mathematics A-level are compulsory at every school in the network — this is the one universal constant. Everything else on the timetable is chosen to complement those two subjects.

The typical third and fourth subject menu

Beyond the compulsory pair, schools generally offer a shortlist of STEM-adjacent subjects rather than a full sixth-form prospectus. Physics and Computer Science are common choices across the network; Chemistry and Economics also appear at some schools. Exeter, for example, requires at least one further STEM subject from a list including Physics and Computer Science. Why the menu is narrower than a normal sixth form

With only 60–65 students per year group, a maths school simply can't timetable the twenty-plus subject options a large comprehensive sixth form can. The trade-off is depth: what is on offer is usually taught by staff who specialise in that exact combination of students, often with links into the sponsoring university's own maths, physics or computer science departments.

Beyond the A-level syllabus

Most schools layer extension work on top of the standard curriculum — research projects, enrichment strands (Exeter calls its own version "Curriculum X" and offers the Exeter Mathematics Certificate alongside it), and preparation for university admissions tests like STEP and TMUA.
