Every maths school inspected to date has been rated Outstanding, or the equivalent top category under the current framework. That headline is true and worth taking seriously — it's also worth understanding exactly what it means, because the inspection framework for this specific type of institution has some quirks that a simple "all Outstanding" headline glosses over.

A framework nuance worth knowing

Since September 2024, Ofsted no longer gives mainstream schools a single "overall effectiveness" headline grade — inspections instead report a set of separate judgements. Several maths schools, though, are inspected as post-16-only providers under the Further Education and Skills framework rather than the mainstream schools framework, and that framework still produces a clear "Outstanding"-level outcome shown prominently on the provider's Ofsted report page. Newer schools are typically visited first for a lighter "monitoring visit" (assessed only against a small number of progress themes, no headline grade at all) before qualifying for a full inspection later. Cambridge Maths School's April 2026 inspection went further still, rating it "Exceptional" — a category Ofsted reserves for practice among the very best nationally, one level above a standard Outstanding.

None of this means the ratings aren't genuine achievements — inspectors are independent and the bar is real. It does mean "every maths school is rated Outstanding" is doing more work as a marketing line than as a precise description of eleven different inspection outcomes at different stages of maturity.
