Leeds Mathematics School

First-ever results (Aug 2025) made it Yorkshire's top-performing state school in The Times' table.

Leeds Mathematics School opened in 2023, sponsored by the University of Leeds in partnership with The GORSE Academies Trust — a large multi-academy trust rather than a single sixth-form college, a different sponsor model from most of the network. Its first-ever A-level results, published August 2025, were strong enough to make it Yorkshire and the Humber's top-performing state school in The Times' league table, with 93% of leavers progressing to Russell Group or Guardian Top-30 universities.

Admissions

GCSE requirements
Grade 7+ in Maths; grade 7/7 in Combined Science, or grade 7+ in the specific Physics/Chemistry needed for your chosen A-levels; grade 4+ in English Language; six GCSEs overall at grade 5+.
Entrance test
"Mathematics Aptitude Assessment" (MAA) — a 60-minute, non-calculator written paper at GCSE Higher-tier level but less structured, requiring independent problem-solving.
Interview
A mathematical problem-solving interview with an LMaS teacher, plus a wider discussion based on the applicant's reference form.
Deadline
For September 2027 entry: applications open Monday 12 October 2026 and close Sunday 20 December 2026; admissions assessment days 6, 9 or 10 February 2027.

Plus two more from Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science or Mandarin Chinese in Year 12 (each taught 5 hours/week); most students narrow to one of these in Year 13 (3 A-levels total), some continue with all four.

Culture & ethos

Motto: "If you love Maths, you'll love LMaS." All students complete the Leeds Mathematics Certificate (LMC), an extended research project set by university and industry academics, alongside weekly "Advanced Mathematical Problem-Solving" sessions and fortnightly current-affairs "Topical Talk" sessions run with the Economist Educational Foundation. Facilities include a 100-seat lecture theatre and an on-site fitness suite; enrichment includes rowing, karate and music.
